Should I buy a used electric car?
Used Electric vehicles are simply the most economical form of private transport available, there is no premium for it being an EV and you get all the savings on running costs, once you understand how and why a used Electric vehicle in the UK is so cheap you realise it’s an absolute no brainer and could save many people hundreds of pounds per month in fuel, below we explain how and why.
The same price and a used petrol car
A used electric car is often the same price or cheaper than the equivalent Petrol or diesel car once they get to three years old. This means you do not pay any more for the Electric car making them exceptional value to buy and then run.
Running costs
Running costs for an EV are significantly less than an ICE car if you can park your car next to your house and access domestic overnight charging. Domestic overnight charging is about 1.8p per mile depending on the size and efficiency of your Electric vehicle. (7p per KWH March 2025) If you cannot access domestic overnight charging then an EV may not be right for you at this time.
Environmental benefits
Everyone knows about climate change and CO2 emissions and balancing our Electricity grid with the use of Electric vehicles is the future. But did you know that overnight there is too much electricity available and in the early evenings there is extremes of demand that can be fed from EV’s plugged in to the grid. This is all future planning but don’t worry there is plenty of electricity for us all to have EV’s charging overnight and an EV is zero emission!
Battery technology
Battery technology is constantly advancing, and some cars can now do over 400 miles in a single charge. Â We will talk to you about how many miles you do maximum in a single day on a regular basis and ensure you buy the right car to do 90% of your daily driving without using public charging.Â
Public Charging
Most EV drivers only use public charging 3-4 times per year, more than half never use public chargers. Public charging is up to 10 times more expensive than domestic overnight charging but is normally slightly less expensive per mile than petrol cars. So only on a long run would you need public charging and if you buy the car with the right range for 90% of your daily drives you will rarely use public charging.
Battery reliability
Having experienced Electric vehicles for many years now battery life is turning out to be a non issue. A battery is lasting far longer than anyone expected and certainly much longer than an engine would last in a traditional car. Did you know many car batteries out live the car and go on to have a second life storing electricity on the national grid to help balance the load often lasting more than 20 years.
